The Modesto Junior College Intercollegiate Speech and Debate team is a co-curricular activity and Communication Studies course sponsored by the Department of Communication Studies and and the Arts, Humanities, and Communication Division. Participation is open to any student enrolled at MJC. Students on the team prepare competitive events including platform speeches, oral interpretation, debate, and limited preparation. Students use these events to compete in tournaments at other community colleges and four-year universities. More information about the events we compete in can be found here.
Intercollegiate Speech and Debate is a 3 unit course offered every spring and fall semester. Students can take the class up to 4 times. If you’d like more information, check out the Prospective Students page for a description of what you can expect on the team.
Every semester, the Speech and Debate team hosts Speech Night. This is a 90-minute showcase of our competitive events including platform speaking, oral interpretation, limited preparation, and debate. If you’d like more information, head to our Speech Night page for details and videos of past shows.
We’d love to hear from you! Check out our Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube page to connect with former teammates and follow the competition.
